Powered Anode for Heaters in Warranty or With Deep Ports

Sales to Alaska/Hawaii

The powered anode consists of a power supply, galvanized steel hex plug and weighted electrode (wire and gray cylinder) that is suspended inside the water heater. In this configuration, the hex nut screws into a galvanized coupling, which screws into a plastic-lined steel nipple, which then screws into the water heater.

What this is about: An issue came up recently that we hadn't foreseen. We already knew the hex nut on the powered anode was wider than the hex nut on a standard hex anode rod, and that in some cases, the sheet-metal cover might have to be cut to accommodate it.

But somebody bought a new heater and was worried it would void the warranty, so we came up with this solution. The nipple and coupling allow the powered anode to be installed without cutting anything, and the anode will protect itself and the coupling because it's the special one that was re-engineered to work with combo-rod water heaters.

What's Included
  • a powered anode
  • a 3-inch plastic-lined steel nipple
  • a galvanized-steel coupling
  • pipe-thread seal tape
  • instructions

This replaces the anode that came with your tank. Fits all brands of all sizes of residential heaters with a hex-head anode in its own port.

What Does It Do?

The anode will keep your tank from rusting and breaking, while alleviating odor problems because of anaerobic bacteria found in some water that react with regular magnesium or aluminum anodes to produce hydrogen sulfide gas and a rotten-egg odor. The nipple and coupling let you install the powered anode without having to cut the sheet-metal top.

In water heaters with softened water but no odor issues, the anode provides a permanent replacement for sacrificial anodes, which are often consumed rapidly in softened water and thus, require frequent replacement.

It IS possible to use in any heater, but if you replace a sacrificial anode in a tank without a softener in hard water, we strongly recommend also putting in a sediment flush kit -- and actually flushing the heater every six months. Sediment buildup can potentially bury the powered-anode electrode and burn it out, after which your heater will rapidly rust out. In this regard, a simple sacrificial anode may be less of a hassle than a powered one with frequent sediment flushings.

If your tank is in good condition, this will probably be the last anode you ever have to buy. For more on this, read What Kills Water Heaters.

If you have a vacation cabin where the water heater sits idle, it may be that, no matter what anode you put in it, the water will still smell bad. We don't want you to buy a powered anode if it won't solve your problem. You might do better to replumb your water heater to allow hydrogen peroxide to easily be added. That WILL solve the problem. Tools Needed
Socket wrench with 1 1/16-inch socket to remove old anode, adjustable wrench to tighten new one, which has a1 1/2-inch hex nut. For further details, check out the Tools page and Know-How.

Important: Before You Order

This anode must replace the one that came with the tank or the smell won't go away. If your tank has two anodes, the second one must also be removed.

If you have a power vent heater, the power connector will stick up somewhat above the top of the tank and may prevent reinstallation of the vent housing.
